Summary
~ Information is key; people who are quarantined need to understand the situation to protect their mental health
~ Effective and rapid communication is essential to prevent mental illness and traumatic stress
~ Supplies (both general and medical) need to be provided or available (i.e. online shopping)
~ The quarantine period should be short and the duration should not be changed unless in extreme circumstances
~ Most of the adverse mental health effects such as depression, anxiety and trauma come from the imposition of a restriction of freedom causing a feeling of helplessness
~ Voluntary quarantine is associated with less mental health distress and fewer long-term symptoms of mental illness
~ Public health officials should emphasize the altruistic choice of self-isolating and quarantine to maintain personal health and prevent community spread of disease.
~Assisting people in focusing on what they can control is a life hack that will help them feel empowered and reduce anxiety, anger and depression.
