In this video, I explain how intermittent fasting can improve your mental clarity and sharpness. Research shows the benefit that intermittent fasting has on certain parts of the brain. One of them is the hippocampus. You have two of them; one on each side of the brain.

The hippocampus is intimately involved with memory, learning, and spatial navigation, which is your ability to locate yourself in your environment. When people have dementia, for example, they have a difficult time figuring out where they are. They get lost easily in familiar environments.

When you improve your hippocampus, you can actually grow new synapses. You can slow down the aging process, improve your memory, and sometimes improve your mental state. And you can definitely improve your ability to find yourself in your environment.

In animal studies, if you damage the hippocampus they become hyperactive and have difficulty learning. Sounds familiar with kids, right? So, what causes damage to the hippocampus?

The answer is stress with its high levels of cortisol. There’s a condition with high levels of cortisol called Cushing’s syndrome that damages the hippocampus. Other factors include vitamin B1 deficiency and high levels of sugar and insulin. That’s why one of the symptoms of diabetes is dementia. Plus, high levels of cortisol, sugar, and insulin can deplete vitamin B1, which is like a double whammy.

Vitamin B1 is vital to your hippocampus for it to work correctly. The best source of B1 is nutritional yeast. Aerobic exercise and low stress are also very beneficial for improving the function of your hippocampus.

For intermittent fasting, start with three meals per day and no snacking. Add more healthy fat to your meals so you can go longer in between. Over time, knock out your breakfast. You probably won’t be hungry in the morning anyway. Once you’re down to two meals per day, gradually reduce your window of eating to just four hours. For example, eat at one pm and five pm. If you want to take it one step further, go to one meal per day. That will really help improve your hippocampus, especially if you have any of the problems I’ve mentioned.
