UC San Diego Health Nurse Becomes the Patient and Goes Red for Heart Health

One day, while Laura Holcomb, nurse manager, was walking into work at the Cardiovascular Institute at UC San Diego Health, she felt something in her chest pop and her heart start to race. “I felt like I was having a massive heart attack.” UC San Diego Health doctors discovered a congenital heart defect and performed open heart surgery to save her life.

Millions of Americans like Holcomb suffer from heart disease, which kills more women each year than all cancers combined. Her story illustrates the need to bring awareness to heart disease, symptoms and prevention. That’s why UC San Diego Health joins with the American Heart Association to promote their Go Red for Women campaign in February, which is women’s heart health month.
